“Among their experiments, the Nazis determined to discover how fast people would starve given inadequate diets. They provided inmates with as few as 300 calories per day. In one camp, most of the inmates died on this diet, but one small camp had many survivors. When camps were liberated, the leader of the group was asked why he thought his fellow inmates survived. He said,
“Each day with our meager meal, we gathered together and talked about the most wonderful meals we had ever had and the wonderful meals we might have again, in the future.”
